THE AGE OF DISENCHANTMENTS The Epic Story of Spain’s Most Notorious Literary Family and the Long Shadow of the Spanish Civil War By Aaron Shulman

“The Poet Tells the Truth” is a famous poem by Federico García Lorca, but what if the poet doesn’t? What kind of poetry can you write if everything about you is a lie? That’s the question at the heart of “The Age of Disenchantments,” Aaron Shulman’s intriguing narrative of literary ambition and family dysfunction — betrayal, drug addiction and madness — that begins during the Spanish Civil War and continues into this century.

In Spain, the Paneros — the paterfamilias, Leopoldo, the unofficial poet laureate of Francoism; his wife, Felicidad; and their three sons, Juan Luis, Leopoldo María and Michi — are “a literary subgenre unto themselves,” writes Shulman, a journalist who became obsessed with them after seeing “El Desencanto” (“The Disenchantment”), a 1976 documentary about their lives. In addition to producing thousands of pages of poetry and prose, the Paneros have inspired academic studies, fan fiction, film treatments and Twitter hashtags, but they are virtually unknown in the English-speaking world.

Shulman, who appears to have read everything ever written by or about them, aims to change that fact, arguing that the family’s story “held within it Spain’s story across the breadth of the 20th century” — from fascism to democracy, from repression to openness.

Shulman sometimes seems uncertain what lesson to draw from his subjects’ baroque carryings-on, asserting that “they mean whatever we want them to mean.” The view of Jaime Chávarri, the director of “El Desencanto,” is more definitive. “The Paneros,” he concluded, “were their masks.” Their tragedy is that underneath was nothing. It’s a tragedy Leopoldo Panero hinted at in a poem he finished the morning he died. “What matters,” he wrote, “is what is real.” If only he, and his wife and sons, had understood that.
